Karlovy Vary: arrive through Prague, decide between a stay and a day, then give Loket or Mariánské Lázně their own time

Karlovy Vary has an airport, but it serves seasonal charter flights rather than a regular network, so the practical gateway is Václav Havel Airport Prague, roughly two hours away by road; the more useful planning questions are whether the town is a night’s stay or a day out, and what, beyond the colonnades, deserves a place in the plan.

A practical destination note

The spa quarter follows the narrow valley of the Teplá, from the Hot Spring Colonnade and Vřídlo past the Mill and Market Colonnades to Grandhotel Pupp at its southern end; almost everything a first visit is about sits within walking distance along the river, with the newer town, the main bus terminal and the railway stations lower down, where the Teplá meets the Ohře.

Seen in a day from Prague, the town is the colonnades, a cup of spring water and an early start home. Seen over a night or two, it becomes quieter mornings at the springs, an afternoon in thermal water and an evening when the day visitors have left, which is when the spa town is at its most itself.

Where coordination helps

A request can be as focused as the part that needs attention.

A Prague arrival, not a local one

Plan on Václav Havel Airport Prague and roughly two hours by road; the local airport serves seasonal charters and the train is slow.

A night, not only a day

Stay in the spa quarter if the springs in the quiet of the morning, a thermal afternoon or a relaxed dinner matter to the trip.

Loket or Mariánské Lázně, as their own time

Give Loket a half day and Mariánské Lázně or Františkovy Lázně a day of their own rather than an add-on at the end of a busy afternoon.

Arrive through Prague, by road rather than rail

Karlovy Vary Airport, a few kilometres from the centre, is served mainly by seasonal charter flights, so international travellers usually arrive at Václav Havel Airport Prague and continue about 106 kilometres west by road. A private car takes roughly two hours; RegioJet and FlixBus coaches run from Prague Florenc, Hradčanská, Zlíčín and the airport in around one and a half to two and a quarter hours, and the scenic train through the hills is considerably slower, at well over three hours.

Coaches stop at Tržnice, about five minutes on foot from the spa quarter, and at the main terminal by Dolní nádraží, a fifteen- to twenty-minute walk away, where return services depart. With luggage, or with an arrival timed around dinner or a spa appointment, a car to the hotel door is the easier handover.

A night in the spa quarter or a day from Prague

A day trip gives the colonnades, Vřídlo and a few hours of free time, which suits a first look. A stay of a night or two in the spa quarter allows the springs in the quiet of the morning, an afternoon at a thermal pool or spa hotel, and dinner after the coaches have gone; hotels at the Pupp end of the valley are calmer, while those near the Hot Spring Colonnade put the busiest part of the town on the doorstep.

Traditional spa stays of a week or more, with a programme built around consultations and treatments, are arranged directly with the spa hotels and are a different kind of trip from a short break; it is worth deciding which one this is before choosing where to stay.

Loket, Mariánské Lázně or the wider spa triangle, as their own time

Medieval Loket, with its castle above a tight loop of the Ohře, lies a short drive from Karlovy Vary and fits comfortably into a half day. Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně, the other two West Bohemian members of the UNESCO-listed Great Spa Towns of Europe, each have their own character and reward a proper visit rather than a photograph from the car window.

A stay that sets aside a morning for Loket, or a separate day for Mariánské Lázně, tends to enjoy both places rather than rushing a second town into the end of a long day. The Diana funicular and tower above the town close each year from early January to early February, which is worth knowing for a winter visit.
