A riad inside the medina offers a courtyard house behind an unmarked door, a short walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souks, but reached only on foot down alleys too narrow for a car — luggage is carried the last stretch by porter or handcart, and a late return means navigating those same unlit alleys. Gueliz and Hivernage, the newer districts west of the medina, trade that atmosphere for wide streets, direct hotel drop-offs, and an easier base for a driver or private car waiting each morning.
Neither choice is right for every stay; the point is to name it before booking, since it decides how the rest of the days are planned — whether evenings return to a quiet riad courtyard or to a hotel a short drive from the medina’s evening crowds.
