The reason for travelling was clear.
There was a concert, an opera, a festival appearance or a performance that could not be seen at home. A date was chosen, a ticket was booked, and the rest of the journey was arranged around arriving in time. There might have been one night in the city, perhaps two. The plan was built around the evening itself.
Often, that is enough.
A performance can be the whole purpose of a journey. The hotel only needs to be convenient. The restaurant only needs to be nearby. The city is experienced in fragments: the route from the station, the walk to the venue, the streets after the applause has ended.
But a short first visit can leave something unfinished.
