Amsterdam · experience
The Netherlands’ national museum, built around Rembrandt’s The Night Watch — 800 years of Dutch art and history in one Museumplein visit.
The experience
The Rijksmuseum is the Netherlands’ national museum, and its Gallery of Honour is built around a single destination: Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, lit and hung to reward close, unhurried looking — the largest-ever restoration and research project on the painting is currently under way live in the museum, visible to visitors.
The collection runs far beyond the Dutch Golden Age painters, though — Delftware, ship models, Asian art, historic clothing and everyday objects sit alongside Rembrandt, Vermeer and Frans Hals, retelling Dutch history as something lived rather than only painted.
It is a genuinely large museum — most visitors find two to four hours passes quickly — so this reads better as a dedicated half-day than a brief stop, ideally paired with the Van Gogh Museum a short walk away on the same Museumplein.
