Amsterdam · experience
The world’s largest Van Gogh collection — over 200 paintings and 750 letters tracing his life from a sombre Dutch beginning to the last, prolific months at Auvers.
The experience
The Van Gogh Museum holds over 200 paintings, 500 drawings and more than 750 letters — the single largest collection of his work anywhere, arranged to trace the arc from his early, sombre Dutch period through to the last, feverishly productive months in Auvers. Sunflowers, Almond Blossom and The Potato Eaters all hang here, alongside the correspondence that explains, in his own words, what he was trying to do.
This is a timed-entry ticket rather than a guided tour, so the museum is best treated as an unhurried couple of hours — the permanent collection alone rewards more time than a quick pass between other plans, and the museum runs three temporary exhibitions a year on top of it.
Note that the very best-known late works — The Starry Night, Café Terrace at Night — live in New York and Paris, not here; what Amsterdam offers instead is the fuller, more personal picture of how Van Gogh became the painter those works came from.
