Barcelona · experience
A UNESCO-listed modernist hospital campus built around light, air and gardens — Barcelona’s Modernisme beyond Gaudí, explored skip-the-line at your own pace.
The experience
In the early 1900s, architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner replaced Barcelona’s medieval hospital with something radical: a modern hospital built as a garden campus of ornately decorated pavilions, on the belief that light, air and beauty aided recovery as much as medicine.
The result — now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a genuine counterpoint to Gaudí’s better-known Modernisme — is explored on foot through its pavilions, courtyards and gardens, skip-the-line, with no live guide required to appreciate its decorative detail.
