New York · experience
A small-group day by train up the Hudson — Sleepy Hollow’s historic graveyard, the Walkway Over the Hudson, and the Hudson Highlands village of Cold Spring.
The experience
This is a genuinely small-group day trip — ten travellers at most, led by a single guide from Grand Central the entire way — that trades the usual bus-tour version of “the Hudson Valley” for a slower one built around the Metro-North line itself.
The train first reaches Sleepy Hollow, made famous by Washington Irving, with time to explore the historic graveyard at the centre of the legend. From there, on to Poughkeepsie for the Walkway Over the Hudson, a former rail bridge converted into an elevated pedestrian walkway, with views across the river toward the Catskills.
The day finishes in Cold Spring, in the Hudson Highlands, where West Point and the cliffs of Storm King come into view — the tour formally ends here, leaving the afternoon free for antique shops, a hike, lunch, or simply the train back to the city, whichever suits.
