Tokyo · experience
A barefoot, full-body digital art museum on the Toyosu waterfront — a knee-deep water room of drifting koi, a mirrored orchid garden, and light that shifts with the people inside it.
The experience
teamLab Planets is not a gallery of framed work but four large-scale installations guests walk, wade and climb through barefoot, spread across more than 10,000 square metres on the Toyosu waterfront — trousers that roll up past the knee are the one practical preparation worth making.
The best-known room floods ankle-to-knee-deep water with drifting projected koi that scatter at a footstep; elsewhere, a mirrored infinity room of hanging orchids and a garden that shifts through a slow annual cycle of light complete the sequence. Each installation reacts, in some way, to the people inside it, so no two visits look quite the same.
It is a direct-entry, self-guided ticket — there is no guide and no fixed route — so the museum is best treated as an unhurried couple of hours rather than a single quick stop between other plans.
