Tokyo · experience
A full day beyond Tokyo to Nikko’s UNESCO shrine complex, Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji, with a bilingual guide and lunch included from Ginza.
The experience
Nikko sits roughly two hours north of Tokyo and is the natural second beyond-the-city day alongside Mt Fuji — a UNESCO World Heritage shrine complex set among cedar forest, rather than a mountain view. This coach tour covers its three main sights in one long day: the vermilion Shinkyo Bridge, Nikko Tōshō-gū shrine, Kegon Falls, and Lake Chuzenji.
Tōshō-gū, the elaborately carved shrine complex built for the first Tokugawa shogun, gets the longest stop — over two hours, including the guide’s introduction to its history, famous carvings (the “see no evil” monkeys among them) and its status as one of Japan’s most important shrines. Kegon Falls and the Chuzenji lakeside follow, weather permitting.
It is a genuine day trip rather than a rushed half-day, with lunch included, though the itinerary is admittedly tight — 11 hours covering transit, three separate sites and a meal — so a smooth, on-schedule day depends on traffic cooperating on the drive up and back.
