Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut: Private Day Trip from Vienna

A private twelve-hour ride from Vienna into Austria’s lake district: the lake castle at Gmunden, St Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee, and Hallstatt, with its market square, its famous view and its lake, with collection and return at your address.

12 hours in total, from collection in Vienna to your returnPrivate vehicle

How this ride works

Three lakes, and the village everyone has seen in a photograph.

The Salzkammergut is the lake district of Austria: dozens of lakes between limestone mountains, east of Salzburg, where salt was mined for thousands of years and the emperors spent their summers. Hallstatt, a village on a ledge between a mountain and a lake, is its best-known picture and a UNESCO site.

This is the longest of our days from Vienna. The route goes in by Gmunden on the Traunsee and St Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee, reaches Hallstatt in the early afternoon and returns directly. Of the twelve hours, about seven and a half are on the road and four and a half are yours, most of them in Hallstatt.

Standard ride rules

  • The twelve-hour service is counted door to door, from collection in Vienna to your return, and includes the drive of about three and a half hours each way.
  • Choose all, some or none of the suggested stops, and divide the time in Hallstatt as you wish. The driver waits, moves the car between the stops where that helps, and keeps the return on time.
  • The service begins and ends at a hotel or another address within Vienna. Airport and railway-station connections are not part of this ride and are arranged as a separate transfer.
  • The driver provides collection, private transport, waiting and the nearest practical drop-off and pick-up point for each stop. They are local and can offer practical suggestions, but they are not a licensed tour guide and do not provide guided services inside sights.

Illustrative stop sequence

What the ride can hold.

01 · Confirmed point

Your chosen meeting point

Meet at your hotel or another address within Vienna. The driver confirms the most practical collection point before the ride, and the drive to Hallstatt takes about three and a half hours.

02 · Chosen with you

Schloss Ort, Gmunden

A small castle on an island in the Traunsee, joined to the shore at Gmunden by a long wooden footbridge, with the Traunstein rising straight out of the water behind it. The first sight of the lake district after the motorway, and a good place to stretch your legs for half an hour.

03 · Chosen with you

St Gilgen and the Wolfgangsee

A village of painted houses at the western end of the Wolfgangsee, where Mozart’s mother was born. A walk along the lakeside promenade and a coffee by the water are what it is for. If time is short, this is the stop to leave out, so that more of the day goes to Hallstatt.

04 · Chosen with you

Hallstatt Market Square

The small square at the centre of the village, lined with pastel houses and wooden balconies around a Baroque column. The village is closed to visitors’ cars: the driver leaves the car at one of the car parks at its edge, and the square is a level walk of about ten minutes along the lake.

05 · Chosen with you

The Classic Village Viewpoint

The view that made Hallstatt famous: the church spire and the houses stacked above the water, seen from the lakeside road at the northern end of the village, a few minutes’ walk beyond the market square. People live along this road; the village asks visitors to keep their voices down and not to fly drones.

06 · Chosen with you

Lake Hallstatt

The narrow, deep lake between the mountains, best seen from the water. Electric boats can be hired by the half-hour in season, and a passenger ferry crosses to the railway halt on the far shore. The salt mine above the village, reached by a funicular, is the other choice for this part of the day; it is ticketed and takes about two hours.

07 · Confirmed point

Your agreed final address

Return to your hotel, or to another agreed address within Vienna, such as a restaurant for dinner. The driver selects the closest practical point for drop-off within local access rules.

  • ✓ Fuel, motorway tolls and parking at the stops.

Useful tips

A few details that make the ride easier.

  • Collection is usually at seven in the morning or earlier. Hallstatt is crowded in the middle of the day from May to October; it is at its best late in the afternoon, when the coaches have left.
  • From late autumn to spring the boats and some of the sights close, and the mountain roads can be slow in snow. The day is still possible, with more time in the villages and less on the water.
  • Keep passports, tickets, valuables and essential medication with you rather than in a vehicle left at a stop.
  • Tell us about a folding wheelchair, child seat or mobility needs before confirmation; the right vehicle and access points can then be arranged in advance.
  • Tell us about any reserved entry or tour time when you book, so that the collection time can be set around it.

Before booking

Ride FAQ

Can I customise the ride?

Yes. You may choose all, some or none of the suggested stops, and request another order. The final plan must remain practical within the confirmed twelve-hour service, the driving time and the conditions on the day.

How is the time counted?

Door to door. The twelve hours run from collection in Vienna to your return and include the drive of about three and a half hours each way; the rest is yours in Hallstatt.

What happens after I book?

Your payment confirmation is sent immediately. We then send the practical service details, including the assigned driver and vehicle, once the ride has been scheduled. Payment does not by itself mean the operational service is already assigned.

What if the service cannot be provided?

This is exceptional, but if we cannot provide the booked service we will offer a suitable alternative or arrange a full refund.

What is the cancellation policy?

You may cancel at least 24 hours before the confirmed pickup time for a full refund to the original payment method within five business days. If we confirm a driver no-show, we will also issue a full refund within five business days.

Will there be an official tour guide?

No. The driver is local and may offer practical suggestions, but is not a licensed guide and does not provide guided visits inside sights.

Are entry tickets included?

No. The fare covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel, motorway tolls and parking. Tickets and tours at the sights, where they are needed, are bought or reserved separately. If you reserve a timed entry, tell us when booking, so that the day can be shaped around it.

Do I need to be in good physical shape?

A moderate level is enough. Hallstatt is closed to visitors’ cars and is seen on foot, mostly on level ground along the lake, with some steps and cobbles in the village.

Can the ride start or end at the airport?

Not this one. The day begins and ends at a hotel or another address within Vienna. For an arrival or a departure, ask us for a separate transfer.
