Salzburg Day Trip from Vienna

A private ten-hour ride from Vienna to Mozart’s city: the old town and the cathedral, the fortress above them, the gardens of Mirabell and the summer palace of Hellbrunn, with collection and return at your address.

10 hours in total, from collection in Vienna to your returnPrivate vehicle

How this ride works

A long drive, and a city that repays it.

Salzburg was for a thousand years the capital of its own small state, ruled by prince-archbishops who built it as a Rome of the north: domes, squares and fountains between a river and a fortress rock, with the Alps beginning at the edge of the town. Mozart was born here, and The Sound of Music was filmed here.

It is a long way from Vienna: about three hours each way on the motorway. Ten hours door to door leave around four in Salzburg, so an early start is worth it. Five stops are suggested, and three of them, chosen with the driver on the way, make a better day than all five in a hurry.

Standard ride rules

  • The ten-hour service is counted door to door, from collection in Vienna to your return, and includes the drive of about three hours each way.
  • Choose all, some or none of the suggested stops, and divide the time in Salzburg as you wish. The driver waits, moves the car between the stops where that helps, and keeps the return on time.
  • The service begins and ends at a hotel or another address within Vienna. Airport and railway-station connections are not part of this ride and are arranged as a separate transfer.
  • The driver provides collection, private transport, waiting and the nearest practical drop-off and pick-up point for each stop. They are local and can offer practical suggestions, but they are not a licensed tour guide and do not provide guided services inside sights.

Illustrative stop sequence

What the ride can hold.

01 · Confirmed point

Your chosen meeting point

Meet at your hotel or another address within Vienna. The driver confirms the most practical collection point before the ride, and the drive to Salzburg takes about three hours.

02 · Chosen with you

Salzburg Old Town

The old town on the left bank of the Salzach, listed by UNESCO: the Getreidegasse with its wrought-iron signs, the house at number 9 where Mozart was born in 1756, and a chain of squares between the cathedral and the river. It is closed to traffic, so the driver leaves you at its edge, and everything in it is a few minutes’ walk apart.

03 · Chosen with you

Hohensalzburg Fortress

The fortress of the prince-archbishops on the hill above the old town, begun in 1077 and one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. It is reached from the old town by a funicular or by a steep walk of about twenty minutes; both the funicular and the fortress are ticketed. Allow an hour and a half if you go up.

04 · Chosen with you

Salzburg Cathedral

The early Baroque cathedral at the centre of the old town, consecrated in 1628, with a pale marble front and twin towers. Mozart was baptised here, and the font is still in use. A contribution is asked at the door for visits outside services.

05 · Chosen with you

Mirabell Palace

The palace built by a prince-archbishop in 1606 on the right bank of the river, and above all its gardens: formal beds, the Pegasus fountain and the steps that anyone who has seen The Sound of Music will recognise, with the fortress framed at the end of the view. The gardens are free to walk.

06 · Chosen with you

Hellbrunn Palace

A summer palace of the 1610s a short drive south of the city, built for a prince-archbishop who liked to surprise his guests: its trick fountains still soak visitors on a guided round. The fountains and the palace run from spring to autumn and are ticketed; the park is open all year and free. With four hours in Salzburg, Hellbrunn is best chosen in place of the fortress, not as well as it.

07 · Confirmed point

Useful tips

A few details that make the ride easier.

  • Most guests ask for collection at seven or half past seven in the morning, which gives the middle of the day in Salzburg and a return to Vienna in the early evening.
  • During the Salzburg Festival, from late July to the end of August, the old town is at its busiest and parking near it is limited; the driver may need to leave you a little further out.
  • Keep passports, tickets, valuables and essential medication with you rather than in a vehicle left at a stop.
  • Tell us about a folding wheelchair, child seat or mobility needs before confirmation; the right vehicle and access points can then be arranged in advance.
  • Tell us about any reserved entry or tour time when you book, so that the collection time can be set around it.

Ride FAQ

Can I customise the ride?

Yes. You may choose all, some or none of the suggested stops, and request another order. The final plan must remain practical within the confirmed ten-hour service, the driving time and the conditions on the day.

How is the time counted?

Door to door. The ten hours run from collection in Vienna to your return and include the drive of about three hours each way; the rest is yours in Salzburg.

What happens after I book?

Your payment confirmation is sent immediately. We then send the practical service details, including the assigned driver and vehicle, once the ride has been scheduled. Payment does not by itself mean the operational service is already assigned.

What if the service cannot be provided?

This is exceptional, but if we cannot provide the booked service we will offer a suitable alternative or arrange a full refund.

What is the cancellation policy?

You may cancel at least 24 hours before the confirmed pickup time for a full refund to the original payment method within five business days. If we confirm a driver no-show, we will also issue a full refund within five business days.

Will there be an official tour guide?

No. The driver is local and may offer practical suggestions, but is not a licensed guide and does not provide guided visits inside sights.

Are entry tickets included?

No. The fare covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel, motorway tolls and parking. Tickets and tours at the sights, where they are needed, are bought or reserved separately. If you reserve a timed entry, tell us when booking, so that the day can be shaped around it.

Do I need to be in good physical shape?

A moderate level is enough. The old town is closed to cars and is seen on foot, on level ground. The fortress stands on a steep hill and is reached by funicular or by a climb of about twenty minutes.

Can the ride start or end at the airport?

Not this one. The day begins and ends at a hotel or another address within Vienna. For an arrival or a departure, ask us for a separate transfer.
