Day Trip to the Wachau Valley from Vienna

A private six-hour ride from Vienna along the Danube through the Wachau Valley: the wine town of Krems, the vineyard villages below their castles and the great Baroque abbey at Melk, with collection and return at your address.

6 hours in total, from collection in Vienna to your returnPrivate vehicle

How this ride works

The river road, from Krems to Melk.

The Wachau is the stretch of the Danube between Krems and Melk, some thirty kilometres of terraced vineyards, apricot orchards, small wine villages and castle ruins, listed by UNESCO as a cultural landscape. It begins an hour from Vienna.

The ride goes out to Krems, follows the river road through the valley, past Dürnstein, where Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner, and ends at Melk Abbey before the motorway back. Six hours door to door leave a little over three out of the car: enough for Krems, the abbey and one pause in a village on the way.

Standard ride rules

  • The six-hour service is counted door to door, from collection in Vienna to your return, and includes the drive of about an hour each way.
  • Choose all, some or none of the suggested stops, and divide the time in the Wachau Valley as you wish. The driver waits, moves the car between the stops where that helps, and keeps the return on time.
  • The service begins and ends at a hotel or another address within Vienna. Airport and railway-station connections are not part of this ride and are arranged as a separate transfer.
  • The driver provides collection, private transport, waiting and the nearest practical drop-off and pick-up point for each stop. They are local and can offer practical suggestions, but they are not a licensed tour guide and do not provide guided services inside sights.

Illustrative stop sequence

What the ride can hold.

01 · Confirmed point

Your chosen meeting point

Meet at your hotel or another address within Vienna. The driver confirms the most practical collection point before the ride, and the drive to the Wachau Valley takes about an hour.

02 · Chosen with you

Krems

The wine town at the eastern gate of the Wachau. The old centre is entered through the Steiner Tor, a town gate of 1480, and its long pedestrian street leads on towards the older, quieter quarter of Stein. A good first stop for coffee and a walk, or for a tasting at one of the wine estates if you reserve one.

03 · Chosen with you

Melk Abbey

The Benedictine abbey on a rock above the Danube, founded in 1089 and rebuilt in the early eighteenth century as one of the great Baroque buildings of Europe. The visit takes in the imperial rooms, the Marble Hall, the library and the church, and needs about an hour and a half. It is ticketed, and outside the main season visits may be by guided tour only.

04 · Confirmed point

Your agreed final address

Return to your hotel, or to another agreed address within Vienna, such as a restaurant for dinner. The driver selects the closest practical point for drop-off within local access rules.

Included

  • ✓ Fuel, motorway tolls and parking at the stops.

Useful tips

A few details that make the ride easier.

  • The valley is at its best from April, when the apricot trees flower, to the grape harvest in October. In the winter months many wine taverns and village restaurants are closed.
  • If you would like a wine tasting, reserve it at an estate in Krems or Dürnstein and tell us the time. The white wines of the valley, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, are the reason to come.
  • Keep passports, tickets, valuables and essential medication with you rather than in a vehicle left at a stop.
  • Tell us about a folding wheelchair, child seat or mobility needs before confirmation; the right vehicle and access points can then be arranged in advance.
  • Tell us about any reserved entry or tour time when you book, so that the collection time can be set around it.

Ride FAQ

Can I customise the ride?

Yes. You may choose all, some or none of the suggested stops, and request another order. The final plan must remain practical within the confirmed six-hour service, the driving time and the conditions on the day.

How is the time counted?

Door to door. The six hours run from collection in Vienna to your return and include the drive of about an hour each way; the rest is yours in the Wachau Valley.

What happens after I book?

Your payment confirmation is sent immediately. We then send the practical service details, including the assigned driver and vehicle, once the ride has been scheduled. Payment does not by itself mean the operational service is already assigned.

What if the service cannot be provided?

This is exceptional, but if we cannot provide the booked service we will offer a suitable alternative or arrange a full refund.

What is the cancellation policy?

You may cancel at least 24 hours before the confirmed pickup time for a full refund to the original payment method within five business days. If we confirm a driver no-show, we will also issue a full refund within five business days.

Will there be an official tour guide?

No. The driver is local and may offer practical suggestions, but is not a licensed guide and does not provide guided visits inside sights.

Are entry tickets included?

No. The fare covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel, motorway tolls and parking. Tickets and tours at the sights, where they are needed, are bought or reserved separately. If you reserve a timed entry, tell us when booking, so that the day can be shaped around it.

Do I need to be in good physical shape?

No special fitness is needed. The car brings you as close to each stop as access rules allow; the sights themselves are seen on foot, at your own pace, and the day can be adapted to mobility needs.

Can the ride start or end at the airport?

Not this one. The day begins and ends at a hotel or another address within Vienna. For an arrival or a departure, ask us for a separate transfer.
