Neuschwanstein and Linderhof: Private Day Ride to Bavaria’s Fairytale Castles from Munich

A private ten-hour ride from Munich to the castles of King Ludwig II: the small palace of Linderhof in its Alpine valley, the view from Queen Mary’s Bridge and Neuschwanstein itself, with collection and return at your address.

10 hours in total, from collection in Munich to your returnPrivate vehicle

How this ride works

Two of the king’s castles, and the road between them.

Ludwig II of Bavaria spent his reign and his fortune building castles in which to be alone. Linderhof, the smallest, he finished and lived in. Neuschwanstein, on a rock above the gorge where he had played as a child, he did not: he slept there for fewer than two hundred nights before his death in 1886, and seven weeks later it was opened to the public. It has been the most visited castle in Germany ever since.

The two lie an hour apart on a mountain road that crosses briefly into Austria, which is why a car is the only practical way to see both in a day. Ten hours door to door leave about five and a half at the castles: an hour and a half at Linderhof, and the afternoon at Hohenschwangau for the bridge and Neuschwanstein.

Standard ride rules

  • The ten-hour service is counted door to door, from collection in Munich to your return, and includes the drive of about an hour and three quarters each way.
  • Choose all, some or none of the suggested stops, and divide the time in Neuschwanstein as you wish. The driver waits, moves the car between the stops where that helps, and keeps the return on time.
  • The service begins and ends at a hotel or another address within Munich. Airport and railway-station connections are not part of this ride and are arranged as a separate transfer.
  • The driver provides collection, private transport, waiting and the nearest practical drop-off and pick-up point for each stop. They are local and can offer practical suggestions, but they are not a licensed tour guide and do not provide guided services inside sights.

What the ride can hold.

01 · Confirmed point

Your chosen meeting point

Meet at your hotel or another address within Munich. The driver confirms the most practical collection point before the ride, and the drive to Neuschwanstein takes about an hour and three quarters.

02 · Chosen with you

Schloss Linderhof

The smallest of the three palaces of King Ludwig II and the only one he saw finished: a jewel box in the style of the French kings, in a remote valley of the Ammergau Alps, with terraced gardens and a fountain that rises more than twenty metres. The rooms are seen on the palace’s own short guided tour, with a ticket bought there or in advance; the park is open to walk. Allow an hour and a half.

03 · Chosen with you

Queen Mary’s Bridge

The Marienbrücke, an iron footbridge some ninety metres above the Pöllat Gorge, and the place from which every famous photograph of Neuschwanstein is taken. It is reached from the village by the shuttle bus and a short walk, or on foot in thirty to forty-five minutes uphill. The bridge is closed in snow and ice, usually for much of the winter.

04 · Chosen with you

Neuschwanstein Castle

The castle that Ludwig II began in 1869 as a private dream of the Middle Ages and did not live to see completed, listed by UNESCO in 2025. The interior is seen only on the castle’s own guided tour of about half an hour, with a timed ticket that must be reserved online well ahead; in summer they sell out weeks in advance. Private cars are not allowed up to the castle: the driver leaves you in Hohenschwangau, and the castle is reached on foot in thirty to forty minutes uphill, by shuttle bus or by horse-drawn carriage, paid for locally.

05 · Confirmed point

Your agreed final address

Return to your hotel, or to another agreed address within Munich, such as a restaurant for dinner. The driver selects the closest practical point for drop-off within local access rules.

  • ✓ Collection and return at the agreed hotel or address within Munich.
  • ✓ Waiting in Neuschwanstein and movement between the chosen stops within the total service time.
  • ✓ Fuel, motorway tolls and parking at the stops.
  • ✓ Route coordination, collection instructions and final pick-up/drop-off confirmation before the service.

  • • Licensed guiding, guided visits, museum or monument entry, or a driver acting as an official guide.
  • • Admission tickets and tours at the sights, meals, drinks, gratuities or personal purchases.
  • • Additional time, waiting, distance, unplanned stops or a route materially beyond the confirmed ten-hour service.

Useful tips

A few details that make the ride easier.

  • Reserve the Neuschwanstein tour before you book the ride, on the castle’s official ticket site, for a time in the middle of the afternoon, and tell us the time. Without a ticket the castle is seen only from outside and from the bridge, which many visitors find is enough.
  • The road between Linderhof and Neuschwanstein passes through Austria. There are normally no checks, but every traveller must carry a valid passport or national identity card.
  • Keep passports, tickets, valuables and essential medication with you rather than in a vehicle left at a stop.
  • Tell us about a folding wheelchair, child seat or mobility needs before confirmation; the right vehicle and access points can then be arranged in advance.
  • Tell us about any reserved entry or tour time when you book, so that the collection time can be set around it.

Ride FAQ

Can I customise the ride?

Yes. You may choose all, some or none of the suggested stops, and request another order. The final plan must remain practical within the confirmed ten-hour service, the driving time and the conditions on the day.

How is the time counted?

Door to door. The ten hours run from collection in Munich to your return and include the drive of about an hour and three quarters each way; the rest is yours in Neuschwanstein.

What happens after I book?

Your payment confirmation is sent immediately. We then send the practical service details, including the assigned driver and vehicle, once the ride has been scheduled. Payment does not by itself mean the operational service is already assigned.

What if the service cannot be provided?

This is exceptional, but if we cannot provide the booked service we will offer a suitable alternative or arrange a full refund.

What is the cancellation policy?

You may cancel at least 24 hours before the confirmed pickup time for a full refund to the original payment method within five business days. If we confirm a driver no-show, we will also issue a full refund within five business days.

Will there be an official tour guide?

No. The driver is local and may offer practical suggestions, but is not a licensed guide and does not provide guided visits inside sights.

Are entry tickets included?

No. The fare covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel, motorway tolls and parking. Tickets and tours at the sights, where they are needed, are bought or reserved separately. If you reserve a timed entry, tell us when booking, so that the day can be shaped around it.

Do I need to be in good physical shape?

A moderate level is enough. Private cars are not allowed up to Neuschwanstein: the castle and the bridge are reached from the village on foot, uphill, in thirty to forty-five minutes, or by shuttle bus or carriage with a shorter walk at the top, and the tour inside involves many stairs. If that is difficult for someone in your party, tell us before booking.

Can the ride start or end at the airport?

Not this one. The day begins and ends at a hotel or another address within Munich. For an arrival or a departure, ask us for a separate transfer.
